Headstart Account® - For members aged 13 to 17

The Headstart savings account is designed just for ECU's teenaged members. Whether you are depositing a birthday cheque, lawn mowing money or a paycheque from your first employer, Headstart members can expect their savings to grow quickly with this higher-interest, fee-free account. Headstart members really enjoy using their own ECU Member Card® to make ATM deposits, withdrawals and INTERAC® Direct Payment  purchases.

As a Headstart member, you will also have access to your account through the Internet and by phone, with free MemberDirect® access. MemberDirect provides account transaction history, account balance retrieval, the ability to transfer money between ECU accounts and much more!

Teens who are big savers can invest in GICs for a minimum $500 deposit, a really smart way to protect and nurture their long-term savings.

Headstart Account Details:

  • Interest is calculated daily and paid monthly.

  • Interest rate on the savings account is 1/2% higher than the basic rate paid on our Plan 24 adult account.

  • All transactions through the Headstart Account are processed free of charge.

  • Term deposits are available for a minimum of $500.

  • A Headstart Account holder may apply for a Member Card® with parental consent, which gives you access to your account at all Automated Teller Machines displaying The ACCULINK® Network, INTERAC® and THE EXCHANGE® symbols or for making INTERAC Direct Payment purchases.

  • A low cost Xtreme $ense Account for chequing purposes is available.

Use Text Messaging to Get Your Account Info!
By Amy - Headstart Member age 17

When I was young my parents opened a credit union savings account for me. As I got older, I learned how to use the bank card I was given, as well as some basics about MemberDirect online banking. I learned how to manage my money and to be more responsible. When I got a job I began to spend more, but I worried about keeping track of my balance. Although I knew how to access my funds through the computer, I never seemed to have one around when I needed it. This led me to use telephone banking, but I found it was confusing and time consuming.

Recently, I was asked to test out a new way to do basically everything through MemberDirect Mobile Banking. Mobile banking uses SMS or text messaging to acquire the same information you would using a computer or telephone. You can check your primary account balance – which is my favourite – as well as other account balances and account activity. You can change or disable this feature at any time in case you lose your phone or change your number. And, if you need help, you simply text ‘Help’. This service is a much faster way to get the information you need, it is much easier to remember and operate, and it’s free! Try it.
