Canada and the other countries around the world are on the verge of the greatest demographic shift ever
witnessed. The world’s population is aging, everyday alone 600 Canadians turn age 65. The 2003 world
assembly report on aging noted that in 2002 there were 600 million people age 65+ worldwide, with
approximately 62% of those individuals living in developing countries.
It continued by stating that in 2050, there would be over 2 billion people aged 65 and older. Of these,
65% would live in developing nations. If you add to these figures the Baby Boomer generation and those
beginning to turn 55, the results are astounding. This growth is expected to continue into the 21st Century.
Only in Canada and other more developed countries will elderly dependents come to outnumber dependents
under the age of 15 during the course of the next 25 years. An elder is defined by Statistics Canada as a
person who is 55 years of age or older. The National Advisory Council on Aging adds that in addition to the
3.8 million elders of today, there are another 3.0 million or more near-elders, now aged 50 and over.
This global phenomenon is a result of greater life expectancy due to improved health care and has created an ever-increasing population of
elder citizens. Because the of population aging, old age dependency ratios will rise in every major world region through the next 25 years. In
addition, the world community as a whole will face an elderly support burden that is nearly 50 percent larger in 2025 than it was in 1998.
There will be many decisions for the elders to make as they enjoy their lives and go about their future in whatever direction they may choose.
